Design System Fundamentals A designers guide to the Fluent Design by David Betz Microsoft Design

fluent design

Once a component is tokenized to align to Fluent 2, the Fluent 1 version will remain in the same module, but the module will be separated into a tokenized and non-tokenized folder. Simply put, it’s about designers and developers working better together to create best-in-class experiences that empower our customers. These early efforts toward a shared design language built a better creative environment and fostered stronger partnerships between teams. Create beautiful, cohesive Microsoft experiences using the Fluent 2 UI kits. Built in Figma, the Fluent 2 UI kits contain design assets that map to the code libraries.

Applying a style set to a sub-component that already has a root style set

Historically, Microsoft designers have valued product-level expertise, innovation, and experience. As a discipline, we've focused on building design culture, having a seat at the table, and working more closely alongside engineers to learn, to grow, to craft and build together. Fluent is evolving to be more than a set of outcomes and will define the process by which we collectively design and build products. It represents the growth and influence of design thinking within Microsoft. Figma gives us access to the latest design features and optimizations and helps ensure your designs always stay aligned with Microsoft style. Sass also encourages "mixins" as a way to have one definition of styles that can be used in multiple places.

Your experiences should inspire action, drawing you forward, simply and seamlessly. Experiences are intuitive and expected, creating a feeling of reliability and trust.

It also allows us to reuse native platform components and patterns 80% of the time, focusing our energy on signature experiences instead. Layouts are a culmination of defined rules and intentional organization of content. Bringing your content into thoughtful structures is key, but making it all flow together with a clear hierarchy across platforms and screen sizes requires scaling logic. Individually, adaptive and responsive design can each address this challenge. In some cases, a mix of adaptive and responsive design is the right choice. Column grids are the most common layout used for web applications.

We want simple elements, systematic processes, and coherent products to be synonymous with Microsoft design. To solve this challenge, we must believe that how we do something is as important, if not more important, than what we do. And that a better design system will benefit everyone involved and create a more coherent ecosystem of products.

Systemization When we have a clear scope, and we understand what the feature is going to look like, when we’re ready to start writing real, shippable code — we go into systemization. This phase is creating a real API that is consumable, usually by first-party developers, to ensure we’re not doing something off-track. Depending on the feature or component, we share our work with close partners and MVPs during systemization to help us test things out. Engineers and designers get together to figure out what the scope of an idea is, how much effort it would be to do it, what the benefit is for customers. This effort could last for part of a release or it could last a few releases, depending on how complex the thing is. So it’s like a software as a service (SaaS) model, except it’s design-system as a service?

Breakpoints also represent a subset of common device or viewport dimensions. Instead, determined ranges provide a strong and consistent foundation to build on for nearly any device. There are many ways to combine columns, gutters, and margins to create different grid layouts. Consistency is key to building familiar patterns that make your app easy to scan and navigate. A good grid will also adapt to different screen sizes and orientations, ensuring cohesion across environments. A layout that adapts to different screen sizes and is aware of the platform it’s on makes an experience feel natural.

App Icons

The important thing to note is that this isn’t just designers’ blue-sky thinking. It’s driven from real customer insight, as well as engineering and product goals. UI objects can include images, graphics, or icons–all of which are typically inconsistent in their width and their height. A good tip when combining objects with content is to align objects centrally and to align text left. Horizontal alignment is the alignment of the left, center and right edges of components. Be sure to check the release notesto see what’s been changed or added.

Use spacing to create a roomy visual rhythm and areas of focus. Fluent’s superpower is its ability to adapt to different platforms and environments. That means that we tailor our updates to each platform we support. You’ll be able to build a fluid and natural experience for your customers every time. Explore the next evolution of Microsoft’s design system, enabling more seamless collaboration and creativity than ever.

With each release of Fluent UI Apple, we align more components to the Fluent 2 design language. Once a component is tokenized to align to Fluent 2, the Fluent 1 version will no longer be available. Earlier this year, I wrote about how we’re evolving the Fluent Design System to be “more than a set of outcomes” and how we use it to collectively design and build products. Our efforts do not seek a one-size-fits-all answer or design for the lowest common denominator. Instead, Fluent must encompass our shared foundation plus layers of product experience and brand expression, across platforms.

In Windows 11, the use of depth is expanded by overlapping different surfaces with different opacities of the Mica material. Scenarios like "make this area of the screen use a different theme" become really complicated if build time is the only time for evaluations. The styling package has a helper to provide consistent focus rectangles.

Our pipeline to load the raw css goes through a javascript conversion process and gets loaded on the page via a javascript library called load-themed-styles. Effectively, we have a complex build process which takes rules, converts them into JavaScript, and loads them dynamically. Keep your content organized, readable, and balanced by optimizing the composition as window size increases. It’s used in every component and layout to create a familiar and cohesive product experience, regardless of device or environment. Values in the ramp abide by the native platform scaling and pixel density. In iOS, values are measured in points (PT), in Android, density-independent pixels (DP), and in Web React, pixels (PX).

Fork or collapse page elements and content to retain focus on important info and actions. Vertical alignment is when the placement of the top, center and bottom elements align together on the same horizontal plane. Margin widths can be fixed or percentage-based and can change at different breakpoints.

Responsive layout techniques deliver an efficient and effective experience that adapts across window or device sizes and provides equal access to information. Columns are the building blocks of a grid and mark where elements should be placed. A 12 column framework is common for its flexibility and easy division. It’s highly composite for layouts and can update responsively based on screen size. Today, Fluent is simple in its emphasis on systematizing the fundamentals.

Fluent’s global spacing ramp is designed to help makers get the best use out of consistent spacing while staying flexible to meet each experience’s needs. The base unit is four pixels which allows a scale of supported sizes. Fluent’s layout system defines how our apps use space to create relationships between components, highlight what’s most important, and help people make decisions comfortably on any screen. Be sure to read our component documentation to create fully accessible and delightful experiences with Fluent.

How To Use 3-Barrel Curling Iron

3 barrel iron hair

It’s a very flimsy hair waver with an unusual clamp that makes it very difficult to maneuver through hair— I couldn’t even get a great grip on it. Where this device loses out is in the usability and durability categories. Though it has a great, easy-to-read digital screen and intuitive buttons, said buttons don’t lock and are placed directly at the base of the clamp, so it’s easy to accidentally press them during the styling process. The Hot Tools Pro Artist 24K Gold 3 Barrel Hair Waver earned perfect scores in every category—build and durability, usability, and performance.

All in all, though, this Revlon curling iron is a solid choice if you’re on a tight budget. If your hair is prone to heat damage, you’re certainly not alone, but it’s essential to make sure you’re not using too much heat when you style. Different hair types respond best to different temperatures, but a good rule of thumb is to start at around 350 degrees Fahrenheit. However, coarser hair can require higher temperatures to curl, and fine or color-treated hair might be better off with temperatures below 280 degrees Fahrenheit. Apply a heat protectant spray to your hair to prevent damage from the heat of the curling iron. Blow-dry your hair and make sure it is completely dry before using the curling iron.

ATH Opinion: Does Hair Training Work and Which Hair Type Can Benefit From this Technique

The Amika High Tide Deep Wave Hair Crimper won our spot for best safety features amongst the best hair wavers due to its ability to keep you and your hair protected during styling. This waver also takes longer than a few of the other picks on the list, particularly the Best Overall pick, to heat up, but once it reaches temperature, it delivers effortless beach waves in a flash. The resulting look is very attractive and holds up well, but I needed to use a bit of a softer hand, as the clamp creased hair more than I would have liked when I let the clamp fully close down on my strands. This could be attributed to the fact that this hair waver feels heavier all around. If you've been on Instagram at all recently, chances are you've come across one of these intimidating-looking tools. Picture three curling irons squished together, and you're most of the way to understanding the purpose of triple-barrel curling irons.

Cheaper tools may not heat evenly and may cause hot spots, leading to uneven heating and damage to your hair. Never use heating tools on wet hair, as this can cause severe damage. Make sure your hair is completely dry before using any heating tool. What’s more, the hair waver has a very outdated set of controls that don’t quite make sense. Rather than a screen, there’s a big red "on/off" switch and a dial that goes from 0 to 30 in increments of 5. Although the instructions offer some guidance on the temperature range to use based on your hair type, those numbers don’t match the increments on the dial.

The InsertNameHere Insert Waves Here 3 Barrel Ceramic Curling Iron picked up our spot for having the most aesthetic design amongst the best hair wavers thanks to its eye-catching look. The Bondi Boost Wave Wand won our spot for producing the smoothest waves amongst the best hair wavers due to its ability to produce sleek waves. The Hot Tools Pro Artist 24K Gold 3 Barrel Hair Waver earned our Best Overall spot for its best hair wavers due to its durability, usability, and performance. If you like it hot for easier and faster styling, you need this literal hot tool. The Hot Tools Deep Waver is designed with proprietary tech that's capable of sensing a drop in temperature.

How to Use 3-barrel Curling Iron?

The instructions provide clear guidance on the most suitable temperature settings for different hair types. I chose to wave my medium-textured hair that falls about two inches past my shoulders on 350°F—a temp that was at the lower end of the recommended range for this hair type. If your hand gets easily fatigued while styling, avoid a heavy 3-barrel curling iron, and invest in the Beachwaver instead. It's a rotating curling iron capable of styling your hair into waves in just a few minutes. A 3-barrel curling iron can be used on a variety of hair types.

Beyond that, the hair waver doesn’t feel nearly as durable as some of the other options we tested. The buttons are also in an area that’s easy to accidentally toggle while styling your hair. Overall, it’s worth spending more to get better functionality. The Conair Double Ceramic Triple Barrel Curl Styling Waver is among one of the best budget-friendly hair wavers we tested, but the value wasn’t quite there.

Apply a heat-protectant product to your hair before using the curling iron. I checked out best-seller lists across retailers and other editorial lists to find the best hair wavers on the market. Then, I put each one to the test, pitting the top-rated brands against one another to find the best of the best. The Alure Three Barrel Curling Iron Wand is very comparable to the Insert Name Here hair waver that’s more than double the price.

Plus, it has a pink and black color scheme that’s easy on the eyes. Also, unlike most hair wavers, the first Insert Waves Here waver I received was a lemon—it wouldn’t turn on, even after following the instructions to a T and trying multiple outlets. Though the replacement I got worked just fine, this gives me pause in regards to overall quality and longevity.

Whether you’re looking for a casual, beachy wave or a more formal, polished look. A 3-barrel curling iron can be a valuable addition to your beauty routine. Invest in high-quality heating tools that are less likely to cause damage to your hair.

This budget-friendly Revlon jumbo three-barrel hair waver heats up to 420 degrees Fahrenheit and offers 30 heat settings to choose from. The barrels are coated with ceramic and tourmaline for added protection, and while it does not list a specific barrel width, most customers seem to agree that the barrels are about 1 inch. The best hair wavers are designed with three equally sized curling iron-like barrels. As is the case with many beauty products, prices for hair wavers vary tremendously.

That said, I tested my hair with that temperature because this was one of the first hair wavers I tested and there wasn’t any guidance available. At this temperature, the hair waver gave me a substantial wavy look that remained in place throughout my entire 9-hour-long day. The iron alerts you when it’s fully heated, and you won’t be waiting long, as this waver heats up fast—ideal for anyone who is often in a time crunch.

It’s a decent hair waver, as it ultimately delivers an attractive style without much effort, but it’s lacking in some of the more user-friendly elements. It has three barrels that are typically placed close together. Hence, allowing you to create multiple waves or curls at once. The two most common types of hair wavers out there are round triple-barrel hair wavers and single-barrel hair wavers, which are sometimes referred to as deep-V hair wavers. More importantly, this hair waver will give you the beach waves you’re looking for—even if you have straight hair that resists curls. And even on the highest setting, which I chose because my personal preference is to use a hotter temperature and the instructions didn’t provide guidance, I didn't feel like it was singeing my hair. I attribute that last part to the ceramic-glazed plates feeling smooth against my strands.

This hair waver also has a digital screen that’s easy to read, even though it is on the smaller side. The buttons are very intuitive, too, albeit in a position that makes them a little too easy to hit while styling your hair. When it comes to results—arguably the most important aspect of a quality hair waver—this one outperforms the rest. I repeated that action two to three times down each section of hair and all over my head, which took about 15 minutes. It even has a lock—a dial you simply press down—so that you don’t accidentally adjust the settings while you’re using it. Some reviewers have admitted that since the tips of the tool get warm and the handle is a bit clunky, the tool can be a bit unwieldy, too.

A three-barrel curling iron can save you time and energy when it comes to styling your hair. The best three-barrel curling irons can heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to help you sculpt your waves in minutes. They feature barrels made with ceramic, a material that evenly distributes heat and can be used on all hair types. They also have tourmaline coatings, which helps to reduce frizz and seal in moisture by counteracting the positive ions naturally present in dry or damaged hair.

Picture three curling irons squished together, and you're most of the way to understanding the purpose of triple-barrel curling irons.

But even for a hair tool connoisseur like me, when I finally got my hands on one of these babies, I honestly had no idea how I was supposed to use it. So I reached out to Anna Kimble, Drybar's Director of Education and Events, to walk me through how to properly wield this tool. This deep waver combines three barrels into one to give you sculpted beach waves without weighing your hand down, and in case you're a little bit forgetful, the iron also comes with an auto-shutoff feature. Instead, give your hair a break by air-drying or using a different styling method every other day. Apply a heat protectant spray or serum to your hair before using any heating tools.

The most expensive hair waver we tested was more than 10 times the price of the least expensive one we tried. But, price doesn’t necessarily dictate value and performance. Our tests show that the most affordable hair wavers were generally the poorest performers, but, for the most part, middle-of-the-road options were just as desirable as the most expensive hair wavers.

So, if for some reason your curling iron begins to cool off, it'll automatically work to restore heat and keep the iron hot. If you have fine hair, it’s important to use a lower heat setting to avoid damaging your hair. On the other hand, if you have thick or coarse hair, you may need to use a higher heat setting to ensure that the curls hold.

The 2019 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Has Become A Real Sport Sedan

2019 volvo s60 t6 r design

On a positive note, the Sensus chipset has been upgraded for faster boot times, quicker rearview camera responses, and improved navigation recalculations. The original generation of the S60 launched with a trio of inline five-cylinder engines - a naturally aspirated 2.4L with 168 hp and two turbocharged ones with either 197 hp in the 2.4T (later becoming the 2.5T and uprated to 208 hp) or 247 hp in the 2.3L T5. The base engine and T5 had access to five-speed manual and automatic transmissions, but the 2.4T/2.5T was an automatic only, the latter also later gaining an AWD option.

Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design

I started with the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered, since it sounds like an absolute beast on paper. Truth is, it’s not the alien-vaporizing thunderstrike of Thor’s hammer you want it to be. The car undoubtedly looks the part, but that label is going to come down how it is to drive. Each Certified by Volvo vehicle has to pass a rigorous test with more than 170 points, to give you safety and security for every moment.

T6 R-Design: $46,400 or $850/mo • T8 Polestar Engineered: TBD or $1,100/mo

Next up is Volvo’s advanced Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system that lets you follow-the-leader on the highway without driver input. The third of the S60 generations 2.0L turbo-four configurations included a 250-hp T5 turbo, a 316-hp T6 twin-charged engine, and a 400-hp plug-in hybrid with a 21-mile electric range using the T6 engine. The T5 later became the 247-hp B5, while the T8 was uprated to 455 hp. The Care By Volvo subscription program has been more than a bit of a mess in the United States, struggling with a number of issues in relation to insurance and getting cars to drivers. You pay a flat monthly payment which covers everything—there’s no down payment, maintenance is included, insurance is included and you can upgrade to a new Volvo every year.

In regards to handling, the S60 T6 AWD R-Design feels both light on its feet and glued to the ground thanks to its larger wheel-and-tire setup and all-wheel-drive system. Volvo’s compact sedan offers a classy package with good road manners and a potent PHEV at the top of the lineup. Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. Although it’s at home on twisty pavement, the S60 doesn’t quite have the rewarding tactile driving feedback of, say, the BMW 3 Series or the Mercedes C300.

The interior is so tidy, crisp and, well, Scandinavian that it is really attractive from top to bottom. This being the sportier-looking-than-normal R-Design trim, both the seats and ride of this S60 are more aggressive than the standard version’s, but not so much so that they’re uncomfortable. Remember, R-Design models are more show than go, so even though it looks like it might ride as stiffly as a sports car, this S60 is more relaxed than that.

The S60 is available in three trim levels, each equipped with the Sensus Connect touch-screen interface. The Momentum, with the 250-horsepower engine, includes City Safety with Steering Support, a system that works to mitigate or prevent accidents at intersections and with pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. Also standard on the Momentum are a panoramic sunroof and 18-inch wheels.

Volvo S60 Safety

Moving up to the S60 R-Design, the front-drive version gets the 250-horsepower engine while the AWD model gets the T8 powertrain that features the supercharged and turbocharged 313-horsepower engine and the 87-horsepower electric rear motor. This S60 PHEV also boasts gloss-black window trim, mirror caps and grille, as well as Nappa leather sport seats, an R-Design steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather, and shift paddles. We drove an S60 R-Design, an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter inline-4 that sends 316 horsepower to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This S60 T6 AWD R-Design also comes with the Advanced package that costs $2,500 and includes features like a head-up display, Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree-view monitor, and full LED headlights. A few other items like heated rear seats and steering wheel ($750), an upgraded Bowers and Wilkins sound system ($3,200), and special 19-inch R-Design wheels ($800) take this testers price up to $55,490. Yes, but each of those aforementioned German sedans can eclipse that mark quicker when you’re optioning them up.

This generation would usher in the brand-new Drive-E 2.0L four-cylinder powertrains that replaced all the old units. The last and current model - still part of the third of the S60 generations - retained these engines in updated form and also introduced a plug-in hybrid. The 2019 Volvo S60 is a midsize sedan, the start of the third generation of the nameplate. The first-generation S60 ran from 2001 to 2009, and the second-generation vehicle took over from 2010 to 2018.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing. TrueCar has 23 used 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design models for sale nationwide, including a 2019 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2019 Volvo S60 T5 R-Design FWD. Prices for a used 2019 Volvo S60 R-Design currently range from $20,444 to $29,999, with vehicle mileage ranging from 31,049 to 111,197.

The compact luxury sedan segment is chock full of attractive four-doors, and the S60, in my eyes, is most attractive among them. It’s classically handsome on the outside with just the right amount of minimalist Scandinavian influence, while at the same time exuding a pinch of sex appeal from some well-placed curves. A shrunken S90 comes to mind when looking at it, and the miniaturization of the full-size sedan’s elongated profile helps bring the S60 visual weight into perfect proportion with itself. One swipe left from this menu takes back to the main screen, which has four modules for Navigation, radio, phone and then other device features. Another swipe to the left shows the infotainment applications, like Spotify, Pandora, weather, etc.

Rear seat passengers, especially, should be grateful, as compact luxury sedans are notorious for sacrificing rear seat head- and legroom on the altar of form over function – the S60 doesn’t. Being an R-Design model, this S60 test car also features a number of sporty exterior enhancements. The R-Design front grille is a high-gloss piano black mesh that matches the window trim and mirror caps. The lower rear bumper design is also specific to the R-Design and houses dual integrated tailpipes.

The 2019 Volvo S60, along with a wagon variant, the V60, ride on the same platform as the XC90 crossover, S90 sedan, V90 wagon and XC60 crossover. The SPA platform vehicles can have unique wheelbase measurements, ride heights, exterior dimensions and interior layouts, while still using shared components and simple factory production line facilities. By shedding its legacy designs, Volvo has become a nimble manufacturer – almost a like a startup car company with nearly a century of car building experience.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology. This all-new Volvo — a 3rd-generation car built at a new factory in South Carolina — is about five inches longer than the previous S60, so it has a much roomier back seat. The 2019 Volvo S60 is available through traditional channels or via Care by Volvo, a premium flat-rate subscription service.

I tend to spend most of my time in SUVs or in my personal full-size pickup truck, so it was a bit of an adjustment to be seated closer to the pavement. The lower seating position and overall center of gravity made cornering a breeze, without a hint of body roll. I was able to concentrate on “slow in, fast out” when I encountered a curve, and the S60’s unique turbocharged/supercharged engine erased any dips in power. The electric power steering by wire was a particular pleasure, with natural feel and weight. S60 is so nicely balanced that little if any mid-corner correction is required, with minimal understeer.

A large 9-inch Sensus screen plays a big role; swipe the vertically oriented screen one way and you’ll see 19 vehicle functions, everything from ESC Sport mode and Active Bending Lights to cruise control and Road Sign Information. Swipe it the other way and you’ll see 22 Applications that range from stereo settings and Bluetooth to Spotify and Pandora. While Sensus helps de-clutter the S60’s dash, it also forces the driver to look away from the road far too often.

All of the driver inputs are electrified, so there’s not a strong feeling of connection regardless, but I didn’t have the same sense of disconnect from the car in the less powerful R-Design. The actual control and stability of the car is without issue, I just didn’t feel plugged into it. Maybe it’s the weight, maybe it’s the electrified drivetrain, maybe it was the cop. If I have 416 HP, I want it actively kicking me in the ass, even if it has to be in the “Dynamic” driving mode. I want to feel the tension in the steering wheel, an energetic vibration in the go pedal.

Volvo S60 T6 Momentum: Which Trim Level Should You Get?.

City Safety provides braking and steering support, adding to the driver’s input when necessary to help avoid an accident. As part of the Advance package, my S60 came with Pilot Assist, Volvo’s “hands-on-the-wheel, eyes-on-the-road” driver assistance system. This system provides steering, distance and speed control in a variety of situations, which can make a long drive much less stressful and fatiguing. The T6 engine makes great power with minimal turbo lag, and no torque steer is felt through the S60’s steering wheel during brisk acceleration. The 8-speed automatic, from Aisin-Warner, shifts smoothly and unobtrusively, and highway cruising in this new Volvo is both comfortable and relaxed.

Volvo S60 T5 AWD Inscription

The T6 AWD Momentum will be available for $775 a month, and the T6 AWD R-Design for $850 a month. While it doesn’t have as many trims as most of its competitors do, when you compare model to model at each level of pricing the V60 is more powerful than most of them. Sensus Connect, the heart of Volvo’s infotainment system, is one of the most intuitive and easy-to-learn systems on any car right now. S60 gets the very latest version of the suite, along with an upgraded chipset that is 50 percent faster than previous versions. Screens seem to load faster, and simple, routine shifting from function-to-function is iPad fast.

Comfort

The S60 R was also later added, with AWD, a 300-hp 2.5L turbo-five and a six-speed manual transmission. For the refresh applied to the 2005 model year, changes to the Volvo S60 turned the T5 into a 2.4L and boosted it to 257 hp, while making it available with a six-speed manual gearbox. The redesigned S60 came with an inline six-cyinder variation of the modular Volvo engine, launching at first only with a 3.0L turbocharged T6 with 300 hp and a six-speed automatic transmission with AWD. A five-cylinder 2.5L T5 would reappear later with 250 hp and FWD or AWD. The ride is smooth, and even on the sportiest models, the suspension still soaks a lot of the aggressive bumps in the road up with no issue. The seats hug you, the materials are the type of plastics and metals that could fill out a Tumblr about a e s t h e t i c s, and the standard panoramic roof and longer wheelbase over the outgoing model make the back seat seem like it might spoil the kids too much.

From a design standpoint, these screens integrate perfectly, avoiding the tacked-on look of some competitors. Beyond the three powertrains, the S60 also gets the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trim levels. The Momentum is the lower trim level available on the T5 and T6 models. These come with 18-inch wheels, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eight-inch touchscreen, and a panoramic sunroof standard. Every S60 comes with City Safety, a suite of driver assistance features that includes collision avoidance and mitigation with other vehicles, with cyclists, with pedestrians and with large animals.

There’s no gaping grille, no weird body colored point driving into the headlights, and it doesn’t look like it’s spent a small fortune on botox, like most of the other “compact” sport and luxury sedans. Volvo is labeling the S60 as a “sports sedan,” and believes its radical approach to go hybrid or fully electric across all models by the end of next year can make up for its lineup of all four-cylinder engines. The Volvo S60 has always been kind of an oddball choice for a midsize luxury sedan.

Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Sedan 4D Safety Technology

In person, looking at a white S60 is like a lesson in shadow and highlight contrast. It pops on the road, especially in the orange-red color the R-Design I drove. One officer just spotted our very suspicious convoy of black Volvos, ready to pounce themselves as they zoomed by. The top-trim Inscription is the luxury option, which also gets the bigger touchscreen, same tailpipe and safety upgrades as the R-Design, and adds navigation, an updated sound system, different chassis tuning, and ventilated front seats. The 2019 Volvo S60 is the latest all-new model in the automaker’s four-year overhaul strategy, that lately has seen the replacement of pretty much every old Volvo with a sleek and sexy new one. It’s based on a modified layout of the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform as the S90 and V90, as well as the XC60 crossover, and it’s the first model built at Volvo’s new Charleston, South Carolina production facility.

If being green is really your thing, though, the S60’s third powertrain option is pairing its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It magically produces even more power, 400 hp to be exact, but can achieve 31 mpg combined when the gas engine is running and travel 22 miles on electricity alone. We’re used to Volvos earning near perfect scores in this category because we like the brand’s Sensus infotainment system so much.

Volvo S60 T6 AWD Inscription

On this note, the drive mode selection takes over the entire 12-inch screen, despite being a physical dial, and lingers for around 10 seconds, which is frustrating if you’re trying to check the map or see which radio station you’re on. It all adds up to a sportier, more engaging and more involved driving experience, despite the R-Design having nearly a 100 HP deficit compared to the Polestar Engineered. It’s turbo-super-charged fun, and it makes me struggle to think why this wouldn’t make a shortlist if you’re still shopping for sedans. This Polestar is not slow by any measure—you look down and realize you’re going 20 mph faster than you feel like you are, or planned to (when there isn’t the Explorer of the Law behind you).

It’s not the worst system I’ve used, not by far, but the sheer amount of small icons could be distracting while driving. I wouldn’t be so hard on the Polestar model if the R-Design didn’t drive as good as it does. The R-Design has the “standard” gear selector, with locked positions for park, reverse, drive, and a slap-over manual mode that will l actually hold the gear you select until you hit redline. I was told by the Volvo folks and a few of my colleagues that it comes alive at the limit, a limit I apparently never approached in the environment we were in despite my trying. Maybe it’s just power the average driver may only experience when passing on the Interstate, perhaps. We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

At a time when mid-size sedans are perceived as a fading genre, it’s nice to meet such a well-sorted, sophisticated and fun new example. S60 will compete with some well-established competition, like the BMW 3 series (also newly refreshed for 2019), Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, Cadillac ATS, Lexus ES (another fresh 2019 model) and Infiniti Q50. The 2019 Volvo S60 belongs in this elevated company thanks to its fresh exterior design, beautiful interior and entertaining powertrain and handling.

Cobus has never been able to keep his car opinions to himself and at age 12, he expressed them in no uncertain terms to a certain motoring magazine’s editor. THE T8 HYBRID POWERTRAINWhen you order the T8 powertrain, you get a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 313 horsepower, along with a rear-mounted electric motor that has 87 horsepower. That makes for an especially quick S60, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that’s as fast as it is efficient. The T6 received a 302-hp version of the 2.0L with both super- and turbocharging. The R-Design at first retained its 325-hp turbo-six, but both five- and six-cylinder powertrains were soon dropped.

Standard equipment on all S60s includes blind-spot monitoring and a cross-traffic-alert system, low-speed automotive emergency braking, rear collision mitigation support, lane-keeping assist, and road-sign-reading functionality. Those items alone can cost thousands of dollars extra on competitors’ cars and are sometimes restricted only to the most expensive trim levels. In regards to space, the S60 fits both its driver and passengers like a tailored shirt. Sure, it’s a compact sedan, so there’s not a lot of extra room for heads, elbows, and knees, but what’s there is just right for normal-sized adults to travel in comfort.

The S60’s interior also benefits from Volvo’s extensive application of screens. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch driver’s display featuring all-digital gauges and extensive functionality from the car’s infotainment system. In the center, though, is an even more impressive vertical 9-inch touchscreen running the brand’s Sensus infotainment system.

While not as flashy as the S90’s insides, the S60’s cabin features high-quality materials like burled metal on the gear and drive mode selectors, more metal on the cup holders’ sliding cover, and even more metal on the trim that outlines the dash. The leather is also top notch, and the very few places that plastic is used, it’s the high-quality, soft, low-gloss stuff. It might just be that the Polestar is so refined and calculated that the visceral experience of the power fades away.

For reference, the 2019 Volvo S60 originally had a starting sticker price of $36,795, with the range-topping S60 T8 Polestar Engineered Inscription Sedan 4D starting at $56,395. For instance, we recently sailed from Galveston and foggy weather made us arrive late (9 a.m.) to the port. Then it took another hour before people started to get off the ship. There aren’t a ton of hotels right at the port (but there are a few). Galveston isn’t that large, so in reality every hotel is just a few minutes away. Once off the ship, you’ll make your way through the terminal and pick up any luggage you set outside your cabin. You’ll then go through customs and immigration to legally enter back into the United States.

In addition, rides are available only on the day of your cruise. If you fly in a day early for your cruise, then you’ll need to find other transportation. The debarkation process actually starts the night before your cruise ends. At that time you will set any large bags you don’t want to carry with you off the ship in the hallway outside your cabin. The crew will pick the bags and they will be transported to the terminal for you to pick up after debarking the ship. The good news is that it’s fairly simple to drop people off in Galveston. Meanwhile, providing a ride to the port saves a lot of money in paying for a shuttle or having to park during the cruise. Independent Parking LotsAs the Port of Galveston has boomed in popularity, nearly a dozen independent parking lots have sprouted up all around the port facility.

These lots typically offer cheaper rates than the official port parking, while sometimes being even closer than the port’s parking. One of the best things about cruising from Galveston is that parking is easy, (relatively) cheap, and convenient. The area around the port offers ample parking, with official Port of Galveston parking lots competing alongside independent lots. Cruise Terminal 10With the size and growth of the Port of Galveston, it was only a matter of time until another terminal was built to accommodate more ships and passengers.

Rather than parking at the port we recommend you stay at a local hotel and take a stress-free transfer to the port.

One thing to note is that Galveston has moved to facial recognition, meaning you simply take a photo that’s verified instead of having to meet with an agent (if you have a passport).
